Hey {{ first name | there }}! Welcome back to The Flow by Flocus. If you’re new around here, welcome! 👋 You can catch up on our previous editions right here.
This week: The “Sunday scaries” — why they happen, what makes them worse, how to reframe them, and how to take the edge off. Let’s get into it!
😟 What Are the Sunday Scaries?
That creeping dread you feel on Sunday before another week of work, school, and life.
This feeling isn’t a personality flaw. And it’s also a lot more common than you might think.
Lots of people you look up to, from mentors to loved ones, struggle with it, too.
The good news: The Sunday scaries are much more manageable than they feel in the moment.
You just gotta find what works for your brain (as we so often say).
But before we explore how to do that, let’s dig into where the Sunday scaries come from.
😵💫 Why They Happen
Our brains need time to shift out of “resting” mode and into “doing” mode.
Sunday just so happens to be the zone between rest and work (for most people).
So it’s the ideal time for our brains to start “pre-stressing” about:
What’s on deck for the coming week
All that unfinished business from last week in the background
How unclear the near future looks in this moment — like one big, formless blob
To be real, the Sunday scaries suck.
Especially when you’re trying to make the most of your dwindling weekend.
But there are some things that can actually make them worse — let’s take a look.
🧠 What Makes It Worse
🤳 Scrolling / numbing — The more you try to run from a feeling, the quicker it catches up to you
🛸 Vague plans with no real anchors — A blurry view of the week ahead causes your brain to concoct worst-case scenarios
🙇♂️ Letting work mode bleed into Sunday too early — Too much planning and prepping can drain your energy before you even start and pull you away from what really matters (family, hobbies, self-care)
Avoid these traps, and you’re well on your way to giving the Sunday scaries the slip.
Before we move on to the how-to’s, let’s take a moment to rethink the “scary” part of your Sundays.
😌 Scaries Reframe
The scaries usually mean you care, not that something is wrong.
Remember how we said that running from a feeling tends to reinforce it?
The same is true about pressuring yourself to “just quit stressing!”
And if you’re like us, you’ve probably experienced yo-yoing between the two in those last few precious hours of your Sunday.
When this happens, try to catch yourself in the act. Then, flip the script:
“I’m anxious because I care about how this week turns out and where my time goes. What can I do to align my vision with reality this week?”
While this is a great starting point, there are more things you can try — read on for more.
🛠️ How to Take the Edge Off
A bit of prep helps, but so does just letting Sunday be Sunday.
(Read that again!)
Check in with yourself and see which way you’re leaning: toward prep, toward rest, or somewhere in between?
Then, try these strategies for clearing space and meeting yourself where you are:
📓 Brain dump — Get all that stuff floating around in your head into a note somewhere
🌙 Protected evening — Is there anything more lush than a Sunday eve spent on anything else but work? Reading, watching TV, taking a bath — do whatever tickles your fancy!
🧖 Sunday shutdown ritual — Indulge in something that signals your Sunday is truly yours (pedicure, hobby, gaming, etc.)
🤏 Beat anxiety with action — If doing a low-stakes task now would make your week easier, clear it off your plate. Example: doing laundry to have all your fave outfits ready to go
🏈 Top Monday tackles — ****Pick 1-2 things to complete on Monday to give your week a clear starting point
Oh, and one last thing: get enough sleep! It’s the best thing you can do for your brain, your body, and your schedule.
