🔦 The Spotlight Effect 101
How to spot the spotlight effect to make life easier — in less than 5 minutes.

Hey there! Welcome back to The Flow by Flocus. If you’re new around here, welcome! 👋 You can catch up on our previous editions right here.
This week: It’s all about the Spotlight Effect — what it is, why it matters, and how to apply it to make life that bit easier. Let’s take a look!
🪩 What’s The Spotlight Effect?
Ever laid awake at night, cringing over something you did or said earlier in the day?
Or face-palmed after saying, “You too!” to the server who told you to enjoy your meal?
If so, you’ve experienced the Spotlight Effect:
A cognitive bias where we think others pay closer attention to our mistakes, appearance, or behavior more than they actually do.
We’re willing to bet your brain has tried to convince you that tiny mistakes like these mean you’re a total failure, or you’re terrible at socializing.
The good news: It’s really not that deep. Most people are too focused on themselves to scrutinize you. Just like you’re (probably) too focused on yourself to scrutinize others!
Simply knowing that the Spotlight Effect exists is a great way to challenge perfectionism and anxiety. Let’s shine a little more light on it to understand why it matters for creating a lush life filled with beautiful memories and experiences.
🪞 Reflection Question
How many times have you held yourself back because you were afraid of looking foolish, inexperienced, or imperfect?
Answering this question and reflecting on those experiences will be an uncomfortable but necessary step for seizing future opportunities without fear.
Consider how many times you’ve overanalyzed your mistakes — and how much time and energy you spent during that process.
Now compare that to all the times you brushed off your wins, achievements, and successes as no big deal. Or how swiftly you moved on to the next goal after reaching your previous one.
The takeaway? Your brain is way harder on you than you deserve. You’ve done some really cool things, and you’ll go on to do lots more — it’s high time you stopped holding yourself back!
Read on to learn how to embrace your mistakes and let go of fear when starting something new.
🌒 How to Turn Off the Spotlight
⚡️ Remember: most people forget small mistakes instantly
Think back to the last time someone made a small mistake in front of you. Maybe they tripped on an untied shoelace, or called someone by the wrong name.
How much time did you spend judging that person afterward? Probably not much, right? There’s a good chance it didn’t even cross your mind again until just now.
Remember this the next time you trip up on the proverbial shoelace. Others likely think about you as often as you think about them — which is probably not very often at all.
😌 Find what feels comfortable
Obsessing over how you want to “come across” to others is pointless and not worth your precious time.
For one thing, you can’t control what others think. And it’s impossible to cater to everyone.
Why put so much emphasis on what others think, anyway? How do you think you express and carry yourself? Are you happy, comfortable, fulfilled?
Shift focus from others to yourself, and you’ll feel the Spotlight Effect start to dim in no time.
🏊♀️ Leap fearlessly into new opportunities
If you’ve worked through some of the other tips we’ve shared, you may have encountered some regrets or other difficult emotions about missed opportunities from your past.
Whatever you’re feeling, know that it’s natural, and it’s okay. But try not to wallow or let it bog you down.
Instead, use it as a catalyst to break down fear of future opportunities.
For example, if you regret declining an invitation to speak at an event, be intentional about accepting the next one — or seeking out other opportunities once you feel ready.
Allowing yourself to do something you previously avoided out of fear is an incredible feeling. And afterward, you’ll likely find there wasn’t anything to be afraid of after all.
