🧼 What’s a Decision Cleanse?

Decisions are the hidden drain on our mental energy and time.

A decision cleanse is all about cutting out your minor, everyday choices that slow you down and exhaust your mental resources.

This frees you up for more important tasks, focused work, and creativity.

Daily unnecessary decisions not only sap your energy each day, but also have a snowball effect over time. The time and energy you waste on minor decisions today, multiplied by weeks or months, adds up to tens or even hundreds of hours in the long run. So let’s cut them out.

🌞 Example: Streamlining Your Morning Routine

Here’s a quick example of a decision cleanse in practice — showing how cutting out small and unnecessary decisions from your routine can make a big impact:

Before a Decision Cleanse

  • ⏰ 😭 Wake up and spend 5 minutes deciding whether to snooze or not

  • 🥣 😭 Go through your kitchen for 7 minutes deciding what to make for breakfast

  • 👕 😭 Open your closet and ponder for 10 minutes over what to wear

How to Apply a Decision Cleanse

  • Identify Non-Critical Decisions: Snoozing, breakfast, outfit

  • Create Systems:

    • Snooze Decision: Set an automatic bedtime alarm and use a smart light alarm clock to naturally wake up at the same time every day, eliminating the snooze debate.

    • Breakfast Decision: Prep overnight oats for the entire week on Sundays. No more staring into the fridge.

    • Outfit Decision: Choose your outfits for the next 3 days. Put them in separate sections of your wardrobe for easy access in the morning.

  • Stick to the Plan: Follow this routine for a week and notice how much smoother your mornings go!

After Decision Cleanse

  • ⏰ ✅ Wake up naturally without snoozing your alarm

  • 🥣 ✅ Grab your premade breakfast and get a head start on the day

  • 👕 ✅ Slide into your pre-picked outfit and go out into the world like you own it

Beyond making your mornings easier and getting your time back, you’re reclaiming a ton of mental space for more meaningful decisions.

  1. List Out Recurring Decisions: Write down the non-critical decisions you make regularly.

  2. Simplify, or Automate: Create simple rules or habits to make those decisions faster, or even cut them out.

Also, ask yourself: “What’s something small I can do today that my tomorrow self will thank me for?”
