We spend most of our days screen-based, sedentary, and light on sensory experiences.

The parts of you that exist under all the thinking need stimulation, too.

Why’s it so hard to realize what’s really happening when we’re “feeling off” in this way?

3 main reasons:

  • We reach for something digital when that itch shows up, which doesn’t scratch it

  • It’s hard to justify doing something "unproductive" when there's always a list to get back to

  • The feeling is vague enough that it's easy to dismiss or push through

Ignoring the signs or brushing them away tends to reinforce the feeling: the opposite of what you want.

To rebalance, you’ll need to “feed” your senses with things that truly nourish you (like getting outside) instead of “junk” activities (like scrolling).

But before we skip to the tips, let’s explore how to tell when your senses need feeding in the first place.

Chances are your senses need tending when you’re:

  • 😵‍💫 Restless but don't know why, even after resting

  • 🤨 Craving something, but can't figure out what

  • 🏃‍♂️ Feeling an urge go outside, hug someone, or just do something with your hands

  • 😿 More moved by small things (like a song, an animal, someone crying) than you normally would be, like something in you is looking for an outlet

🍌 How to Feed It

🍃 Go touch grass

Playing in the dirt is one of the best ways to nourish your sensory needs.

Get involved in gardening, landscaping, nature conservation, etc. for a regular hobby. Joining a group provides accountability and makes it a part of your regular routine.

If organized activities aren’t available to you, make time to get outside some other way. Walk to the park, sit by the water, or simply go “play” in the yard, like you once did as a kid.

The more you can engage your senses, the more balanced and connected you’ll feel.

🥭 Eat whole fruits

Nothing makes us feel more connected to ourselves (and the earth) than peeling and munching on whole fruits.

The smell of a fresh orange peel or that first “crack” of a banana can boost your mood more than you think!

🎤 Attend a live music performance

Check out your local library for info on free and affordable music performances near you.

Or, make a day of it with a ticket for your fave act in a new city.

To really immerse yourself in the experience, turn off your phone for the duration of the show. Take it from us, gigs are way more fun when you’re not checking your phone every 5 minutes!

🧑‍🍳 Make a mess

Sketching, fingerpainting, air-dry clay, and any other art form that leaves both your hands in some kind of “messy” state at the end is perfect for satisfying your senses.

If you’re not into arts and crafts, you can still “make a mess” in other ways: cooking, reorganizing, and playing board games also count!
